Telling a research story: Writing a literature review
This workshop is for anybody interested in writing a thesis or writing for publication in English. Reviewing the literature often presents problems for scholars, perhaps especially in interdisciplinary areas. After an introduction based on a questionnaire, we will review theories of citation, the so-called “scholar before researcher” argument, and typical supervisor’s criticisms of literature reviews (LRs). Then we will consider ways of imposing order on the literature, as well as briefly examining certain linguistic issues, such as choice of tense and reporting verb. Toward the end, we will consider a case study of a doctoral student’s three drafts of part of her LR.
