The Advantages of Genre-based Teaching
In recent years, a range of books (Bhatia, 2004, Devitt, 2004, Swales, 2004, Hyland, 2006, Tardy, 2009) has discussed the nature of genre and how genre-based teaching can be used to empower students at various levels of linguistic proficiency. In this workshop, I briefly discuss these developments and argue that they point to a growing consensus. Then, we will examine some examples of an ostensibly simple genre and see how they can be used effectively with groups of various English language proficiencies. The next activity is designed to show that expertise and genre-knowledge can cross linguistic boundaries. Finally, I move to advanced EAP, taking the case of the genre of the conference abstract, and attempt to draw some conclusions from the various workshop activities.
