Abstract: Traditionally, problems coming from physics have provided both inspirations and challenges for applied mathematics. More recently, image processing, and related areas such as computer vision and computer graphiscs, have emerged as interesting new frontiers and have attracted the attention of many applied mathematicians. In addition to the many applications in various fields such as astronomy, bio-medicine, information technology, they also offer interesting mathematical and computational problems and challenges. At the same time, ideas from mathematics and computation can also bring new ideas to image proccessing. In my talk, I'll give an introduction to some of these new developments, primarily based on my own work in this area.
