讲座内容: The topic focus on the pattern of competition and firm competitive behavior in the context of social networking services (SNS) and the extent to which various aspects of firm competitive behavior influence firm performance. The social networking services industry is unique because competition is based mostly on service and features rather than on products and physical resources; competitive advantages are short-lived; innovation is critical for user gratification and loyalty, and the boundary between the firm and its suppliers and buyers is blurred. Despite the unique characteristics as well as the profound impact the SNS industry is having on the way people communicate and engage in social relationships, we know little about how SNS firms compete, create, and try to maintain advantages. We perform structured content analysis of three years of news reports containing competitive actions of the SNS firms and examine the pattern of actions as well as their relationships with a unique measure of firm performance. We find that firm competitive actions are focused mostly on product/service innovation and alliances. We also find a strong positive relationship between the volume, complexity, magnitude, and novelty of competitive actions and firm performance.  This study provides unique insights about the ways in which firms compete in the industry and offers practical guidelines for researchers and managers in the Web 2.0 arena.
