Conservation Science - 120 Years Preserving our Cultural Heritage
The Rathgen Research Laboratory as the leading institution for conservation science, art technology and archaeometry at the National Museums in Berlin carries out investigations on a broad variety of materials within the museum environment and focuses its research on scientific issues concerning the care of monuments and archaeological sites. It carries forward the tradition of the world's oldest scientific museum laboratory, the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal Museums in Berlin, which was founded on April 1st, 1888 and bears the name of its first director, Friedrich Rathgen.
The modern approach to conservation acknowledges the necessity of scientific investigations preceding any restorative intervention as well as the monitoring and evaluation of its performance. Conservation scientists today have access to a range of methods to assess the efficiency and compatibility of conservation treatments. These methods are applicable to samples in the laboratory or in situ on test sites.
In conservation praxis, there are restrictions imposed by our limited resources, in terms of available funds, staff and infrastructure on revealing the secrets hidden by the objects for conservation questions. By definition, samples should be "representative" for the object, or better, the questions posed for the "object", as a whole. With selected examples from the daily routine of a conservation science laboratory, the importance of continuous scientific research in order to preserve our cultural heritage will be discussed.
