Medical devices, including catheters, mechanical heart valves and orthopaedic implants are critical components of a modern healthcare system, facilitating the treatment and rehabilitation of millions of patients annually. Despite major improvements in surgical procedures, bacterial infections remain a leading cause of medical device failure. Given the significant failure rates in treating medical device-associated infections with antibiotics and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), novel approaches are urgently needed to prevent the development of pathogenic biofilms on medical devices. Inspired by cicada and dragonfly wings whose surfaces have been shown to display bactericidal nanotopographies, we have produced a range of protruding nanostructures on titanium and polymer substrates that are widely used in medical devices and investigated their influence on bacterial adhesion and viability using live/dead and viability assays. We have used a range of advanced imaging/tomography tools and proteomics analysis to elucidate antimicrobial mechanisms of these nanotopographies.
