讲座内容: We can distinguish four groups of mathematical models of single species fisheries. Firstly we have the stock-recruitment Ricker model. It is a single nonlinear difference equation and it was originally developed for salmon fisheries. Next is a delay nonlinear difference equation which has been used for models of whale populations.  We shall describe some current issues of the harvesting of Minke whales by Japan, Norway and Iceland. The logistic model described by a nonlinear differential equation is also a popular fisheries model. Finally we have the Beverton-Holt model which is applicable to a fish population where a single fish can produce a million eggs. Mathematical models have been used to resolve major issues like diversity and stability in theoretical ecology. There is a need to understand the importance of the condition that population numbers are nonnegative variables. This leads to the question which species will survive. We discuss some concepts like resilience and nonvulnerability of complex ecosystems.
