As the next step after Software Defined Networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV) is emerging as a new way to provide network services that are now being carried out by proprietary, dedicated hardware (called middleboxes) to significantly reduce the cost as well as greatly improve the efficiency and flexibility of utilizing hardware resources. However, since VNFs are hosted by general-purposed servers or Virtual Machines (VMs), which are more prone to failures compared to dedicated middleboxes, how to ensure a high availability of the provided network services is an important issue for service providers (SP).
In this talk, I will outline our recent work on analyzing the challenges of provisioning availability in NFV and developing availability-aware resources allocation and placement algorithms for both on-site and off-site backups with the objective of minimizing resource usage.
