Previous studies using simple transcription data show that Cantonese-speaking children can produce all six tones by age two but perception studies show that they still have difficulty in perceiving the tones until age ten. This stands in stark contrast to the general principle that perception precedes production in child language acquisition. Additionally, no acoustic data of Cantonese tone acquisition has been reported so far. All this demonstrates that more study is needed to fully understand the patterns in Cantonese tone acquisition. This study re-examines Cantonese tone acquisition by using more vigorous methods to assess children’s production and collects perception data from the same children to assess the link between production and perception. Preliminary analysis suggests that, contrary to earlier studies, children’s production at age six is still not exactly adult-like. Perception at age six is general good (accuracy around 90%), but the merging tone pairs are still difficult to distinguish. Lexical status affects perception accuracy even at age six. The results show that Cantonese tone acquisition is a protracted process. Implications for research on Mandarin tone acquisition will be discussed. 主办单位:西安交通大学外国语学院
