Since 2D materials have extraordinary properties, they can be used in many applications, such as nanoelectronics, photovoltaics, sensors, thermal management, energy storage, water purification, composite materials, etc. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we studied the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of some 2D materials, including graphene (single-crystalline and polycrystalline graphene), graphene allotropes (such as α-, β-, γ-, and 6612-graphynes), silicene, and black phosphorus. We also studied the effects of temperature, strain rate as well as chemical functionalization on the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of 2D materials. In this talk, I will give a brief summary of our works in this area.
