报告摘要
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high strengths and high resilience and hence display a huge potential for structural applications. However, they are susceptible to shear localization on the application of stress, which accumulates and propagates without hinderance in the absence of microstructural obstacles as shear bands. On the other hand, extensive shear band formation can promote plastic dissipation in front of stress concentrators or notch tips imparting resistance to crack growth in the material. In this talk, certain issues in the area of fracture are considered. They are the following: (a) What is the cause for a huge scatter in the fracture toughness measurements in mode I (b) What is the influence of properties and the internal state on the fracture toughness and plasticity of a BMG? (c) What are the mechanisms of failure in a brittle BMG? To address these issues various experimental investigations along with their analysis are presented along with specific challenges in the field.
