Simulation Based Engineering: From Nano and Bio to Macro System Design
As not only the complexity of engineering problem but also computing power increases rapidly, simulation begins to replace experiment in many disciplines, in particular, nanotechnology and biotechnology due to its effectiveness on cost and time. In this talk, 1 will introduce a variety of applications from nano scale to macro scale. In each application, modeling and simulation play a key role in understanding its fundamental mechanics as well as guiding to optimal design. For instance, normal mode analysis with atomistic modeling of DNA and protein structure can reveal their intrinsic vibration modes that are strongly related to their functions. Using this vibrational feature and self-assembly, one can design various nano structures based on DNA tiles. The synthesized nano structures and their vibrational characteristics are validated and verified by comparison between theoretical values and experimental data obtained by Raman and AFM. Next, 1 will discuss human inherited diseases most of which are caused by misfolded proteins. In this case, simulation also sheds an insight on the mechanism of protein misfolding. If time is allowed, I will briefly introduce several ongoing projects including ion-channel based water purification system, Lithium-ion battery crack propagation, seismic isolation of nuclear power plant, and online health monitoring system for gas/power plants.
