Monolithically Integrated Passives for Power Management System Miniaturization
Monolithic integration of passive components, including inductors, transformers, and capacitors, is of vital importance for power system miniaturization. The need of smaller and lighter systems with lower cost, smaller parasitics, and improved reliability makes passives integration promising for portable and size/cost sensitive applications.
One of the major challenges to build monolithically integrated magnetic devices for power converters is to overcome the limitations of inductance and resistance within a small available area for placing the inductor. Previously available on-chip integrated inductors can only provide a small coil thickness or a small magnetic core thickness, which limits their potential for power conversion applications. Therefore, we proposed the backside embedded approach to increase the thickness of coils and magnetic core of the inductors. In our work, novel integrated capacitors using double trench electrodes with low resistance, high breakdown voltage, and cost effective fabrication processes are proposed to overcome the problems in conventional integrated capacitors.
