The growing material damage in these positions may cause subsequently unstable fracture failure and creates critical threats to the safe operation of these structures. The applied fracture mechanics to assess these cracks/flaws in offshore structures faces a number of fundamental bottlenecks, despite more than six decades of research efforts in understanding the fracture mechanics and mechanisms in steels and metallic materials. This seminar addresses primarily the transferability issue in fracture mechanics from material failure to the fracture representation in large-scale structures.
