Abstract: Design Informatics studies the representation, perception, processing, computation, communication, storage, retrieval and reuse of information and knowledge in the general context of design. Its research and application involves various areas, such as information technology, artificial intelligence, information retrieval and natural language processing, cognitive science, social science, design and so on. In this talk, I will first introduce the concept and scope of design informatics and its rising interests in different design communities in the past few years. I will then describe some of my recent efforts on knowledge discovery and management for product design through data mining, text mining and information retrieval at large, with details on two distinct topics: 1) Discovery and management of design rationale through patent mining; 2) Mining online reviews for product design. I shall close my talk by highlighting some interesting future research directions.
