讲座内容(Abstract):
Moisture, as a thin layer of condensate or as bulk water, is the nemesis of durable adhesion. Water poses a challenge to each of the basic requirements of practical adhesion: 1) the absence of weak boundary layers; 2) good adhesive spreading; 3) energetic interfacial interactions between adhesive and adherend, and 4) curing or hardening of the adhesive. That moisture should be such an impediment to modern adhesive technology is paradoxical because marine mussels routinely attach to all kinds of surfaces using complex fluids that spread spontaneously, exhibit strong interfacial binding, and harden, all underwater.
To successfully decode the unique materials attributes of mussel adhesion into bio-inspired practical wet adhesives will require a deep understanding on molecular level of 1) what’s the polymer/protein functionality that provides energetic wet surface bonding, 2) how the adhesive proteins are delivered and processed to enable wet adhesion. My talk will show what we have learned from mussel wet adhesion regarding to the above aspects.
