城市是国家和地区前进的发动机和驱动力，相比农村地区，城市地区更能拉动经济增长。城市产生的GDP总值占全球GDP的80%，其中，世界排名前100名的大城市向全球贡献了超过35%GDP总值。城市增长是所有国家可持续经济发展不可或缺的动力。
西安坐落于关中-天水经济区，肩负西部大开发和国内及国际丝绸之路的桥头堡重任。本次可持续城市化国际研讨会由西安交通大学主办，邀请澳大利亚、香港、台湾、日本以及西安，在可持续城市化实践、研究、政策制定以及学术领域的领军人物参加。针对中西部地区如何在保持经济高速发展的同时，使城市化及城市发展应对环境变化方面的课题，进行高层次深度探讨。
