Lecture 1
1.Optimization of Multi-Echelon Inventory Systems
Inventory management is a key issue in supply chain management. Effective inventory management can reduce inventory costs while
improving the service to customers. A typical supply chain that consists of multiple stages can be characterized as a multi-echelon
inventory system in which each upstream stage supplies its one or multiple immediate downstream stages. Because of the interdependence
between stages in a supply chain, the optimization of multi-echelon inventory systems is a challenging problem.
In this lecture, two important approaches for optimization of multi-echelon inventory systems, i.e., stochastic service approach and guaranteed service
approach will first be reviewed. Our recent work on using the guaranteed service approach to
optimize multi-echelon inventory systems with fixed order costs will then be presented. Finally, research opportunities
on multi-echelon inventory optimization will be discussed.
Lecture 2
2. Collaborative Logistics
Collaborative logistics has emerged as a key strategy for shippers and carriers to gain competitive advantages through improving their
economics of scale. In collaborative logistics, multiple shippers or carriers form an alliance to jointly optimize their transportation operations
by consolidating or sharing their transportation requests. This collaboration can reduce transportation costs and increase the profit of each
actor involved by reducing empty back hauls and raising vehicle utilizations. In this lecture, both shipper collaboration and carrier collaborati
on will be discussed, and important issues for the two collaborations including collaborative transportation planning and cost/profit allocation
among the shippers/carriers in the alliance will be addressed. After reviewing the state-of-the-art of collaborative logistics, our current work on
carrier collaboration will be presented. This talk will be concluded by a discussion on research opportunities on collaborative logistics.
