The demand of modern society for energy and resources seems endless and by today’s consumption more than twice the globe’s renewable resources are consumed annually. Decreasing this overuse of global resources by lowering the standards of modern life is neither realistic nor desirable. Instead the solution lies in the development of new advanced materials that can further raise the living standards of humanity by improving key technologies, such as better performance of renewable energy sources, and materials for advanced electronics and optics. However, for a long-term environmental sustainability the new materials not only need to be better than today’s, but also earth-abundant, non-toxic, and processable at a low cost and in an environmentally sound manner.
The solution to the above issues can be achieved in the interdisciplinary field of material science and nanotechnology. Both fields have evolved rapidly in the last 20 years and the understanding of how to control material properties, design new advanced nanomaterials and develop more efficient and better energy and electronics applications has progressed enormously in the last decade. In my talk I will give a description of the work conducted in my group as well as other related work focusing on the combination of advanced carbon nanostructures and the highly advanced nanocatalysts and how to apply these for energy conversion.
