讲座内容:
Optical detectors are not inherently polarization sensitive, and so systems designed to measure polarization must encode the polarization data on a series of intensity measurements. After collection, the data are reduced, allowing the polarization to be inferred in a computational sense. There are two primary schemes for designing polarimeters. The first splits the light into multiple copies, each of which is passed through discrete polarization optics. These systems require alignment and synchronization between channels, and they are sensitive to cross-calibration errors, differential polarization aberrations, and other issues that ultimately limit the system performance. We refer to this class of device as wave front splitting polarimeters. The second class of polarimeter, and the subject of this talk, modulates the intensity information into two or more channels that depend on the polarization properties. This modulation could be in time, space, wavelength, or some combination thereof. In our group we have developing novel modulation strategies that allow a polarimeter to be designed with the bandwidth of the scene and sensor balanced for optimum reconstruction. The result are polarimeter configurations that have greatly improved performance when working with dynamic scenes. The talk will begin with an overview of polarization phenomenology and polarimeter design strategies, and will conclude with a review of the recent exciting work in Prof. Tyo's lab on modulated polarimeters.
