Why does nobody believe your results except yourself if you use CFD, and why does everyone believe your results except yourself if you measure fluid flow? This presentation tries to answer these questions by reviewing the past and present applications of CFD to enclosed space environment, such as buildings and aircraft cabins. The applications of CFD to the enclosed environment have shown great successes. This presentation will assess the performance of RANS, LES, and DES models for enclosed space environment simulations by corresponding experimental data. The simulations calculated the distributions of airflow, air temperature, gaseous contaminant concentrations, solid particles, and liquid droplets in the enclosed environment. This presentation will also outline the challenges in using CFD, such as grid resolution, computing time, and moving objects. The opportunities of CFD modeling for enclosed environment, such as inverse simulations and fast fluid dynamics, will be discussed.
