Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm has been receiving a great deal of attention in recent years. The technique was inspired by the observation of the behavior of birds flocking or fish schooling. Many successful applications of PSO for many NP-Hard combinatorial problems have been published in conferences and journals.
This talk will introduce the basic version of PSO to explain the basic rationale. Strengths and weaknesses of PSO will be discussed along with some variants of PSO that were invented to address some of the weaknesses. A summary of design considerations will be given. Lastly, examples of successful applications of PSO will be given for job shop scheduling problem, vehicle routing problem, and multimode resource constrained project scheduling problem.
