The research platform of advanced electron microscopy in the Qüjiang campus of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a key part of the International Centre for Dielectric Research (ICDR), which was founded by Professor Xi Yao in 2009. It complements the existing research groups that work on synthesis and physical properties of materials, and aims to encourage collaboration betweenscientists working on dielectrics research and state-of-the-art atomic structure characterization. Both the instruments and the building that houses the electron microscopy laboratory have been acquired with the aid of generous financial support from XJTU. ForschungszentrumJülich (FZJ), Jülich, Germany,also made great contributions to the laboratory, by sending experienced senior scientists to XJTU to organize and provide adviceduring the construction of the laboratory. It took more than two years, from the start of the building construction in May 2010, to finish setting up the laboratory. Its establishment represents a great successin the collaboration between XJTU and FZJ,which is formalized by amemorandum of understanding signed by the two organizations. It has also benefited fromexcellent cooperation with the instrument manufactures,fromcontinuous support bythe relevant departments and offices in the university, and fromthe hard work of the ICDR team.
An International Workshop on Advanced Electron Microscopy and Materials Research will be held on October 19-21, 2012 to celebrate the inauguration of the electron microscopy laboratory. The programme of eventsincludes a celebration ceremony and scientific lectures. Representatives from XJTU, FZJ, ICDR, Chinese Society of Electron Microscopy, FEI Company and JEOL Company will give addresses in the ceremony. In the academic sessions,internationally leading scientists will present keynote lectures on the frontiers of electron microscopy and materials research. During the workshop, a laboratory tour of the ICDR building in the Qüjiang campus will be organized.
