The human body varies greatly in both size and shape. Current medical practices on replacement surgery with artificial implants do not consider these variations case by case, because, off-the-shelf implants only come in certain size and shape ranges. As a result, often the patient is “fit to the implant rather than the implant to the patient”. The consequence of this approach leads to improper functionality as well as premature failure. The Additive Manufacturing Process Laboratory (AMPL) at University of Michigan has been developing a unique and state of the art planning, designing and on-demand manufacturing platform for custom implants/prosthesis from medical images and CAD data. Medical application of this rapid manufacturing technology presents both opportunities for new types of products as well as opportunities to alter or to extend the application scope of implants and other medical devices. This presentation will demonstrate the robustness as well as challenges of this technology through a wide range of case studies, testing and validation. However, a commercial breakthrough of this technology still has a long way to go, because introducing new technologies in the medical sector generally takes time: technology and clinical relevance need to be demonstrated, and awareness of the potential alternatives has to be created.
