However, it has been proved to be very challenging to realize the prediction in experiments. Progress in our recent experiments has been made by adopting  “bottom-up” approaches to fabricate nanocomposite magnets. The first step of this novel approach involves synthesis and characterization of hard and soft magnetic nanoparticles including FePt, Sm-Co, Nd-Fe-B and Fe-Co nanoparticles. Novel processing techniques including chemical solution methods, salt-matrix annealing and surfactant-assisted ball milling have been applied to prepare the nanoparticles. Mixed powder particles were then consolidated with unconventional compaction techniques including warm compaction and spark plasma sintering. Thanks to the well controlled nanoparticle size and size distribution, strong magnetic exchange coupling has been achieved between the hard and the soft magnetic phases in the compacted samples, which makes the bottom-up approach a promising one for producing bulk nanocomposite magnets with enhanced energy products.
