Abstract Piezoelectric crystal resonators are key elements of oscillators providing frequency references for time keeping, telecommunication and many other applications. The resonant frequencies of crystal resonators must be
maintained with very high accuracy. When a resonator is in operation, its frequencies can be affected by many environmental effects.
Most importantly are the effects of a temperature change which is always present and the effects of accelerations which
are particularly relevant to military applications when oscillators are mounted on missiles, satellites and
other moving objects. Resonator frequency stability against various effects is crucial for their successful operation.
On the other hand, resonator frequency shifts due to various environmental effects are the foundation of acoustic
wave sensors. This presentation summarizes some of our recent results on theoretical analysis of piezoelectric
resonator frequency stability including mainly the effects of relatively large accelerations and time dependent accelerations. The analysis is based on the linear theory for small fields superposed on finite
initial fields in a piezoelectric body. The research was funded by the US Army Research Office.
