Title: Magnetically-Damped Flows and Heat Transfer: Modeling and Measurements
Abstract: Space processing of ultra-high purity single crystals utilizes the electromagnetic field to control and regulate the fluid motion and heat transfer to achieve optimal performance in terms of minimized dopant striation. This talk presents a fundamental study on magnetic damping of metal flows with and without the effect of an applied magnetic field as applied to terrestrial and extraterrestrial melt processing systems. Comprehensive numerical models are developed for the purpose of simulating electromagnetic and transport phenomena in the media with and without radiative transfer participating. The numerical models are based on the combined continuous and discontinuous finite element solution of the Maxwell equations, radiative transfer equations, Navier-Stocks equations and energy balance equations. Experimental measuring systems were developed where liquid gallium is used as working fluid. Flow measurements were taken by hot wire probes for certain configurations. The measurements of the detailed velocity field and temperature profiles are compared with those predicted by the numerical models. Good agreement is obtained between the two.
