Abstract: The simulation of the aeroelastic response of an aircraft in the presence of aerodynamic and structural nonlinearities is an active area for research. This talk will describe progress in developing a method which is efficient enough to allow envelope searches for instability whilst accounting for model uncertainties, even when large dimensional computational fluid dynamics models are used. The method involves the solution of a modified eigenvalue problem which is based on approximations to a term representing the interaction of the fluid and structure. Example results will be shown for generic aircraft models to illustrate the performance of the method for deterministic and non-deterministic cases.
Biography: Ken Badcock is Professor of Computational Aerodynamics and Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Liverpool. He has a doctorate from the University of Oxford in the numerical simulation of unsteady flows, and has held academic positions at the University of Glasgow. His research interests are in CFD, computational aeroelasticity and computational flight dynamics. Further information can be found at www.cfd4aircraft.com.
