Gavin Brookes is Senior Research Associate in the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science at Lancaster University. His research interests include corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and multimodality. His work to-date has focused mostly on language used in illness and healthcare contexts. His recent books include Obesity in the News (with Paul Baker), Corpus, Discourse and Mental Health and Analysing Health Communication: Discourse Approaches (both with Daniel Hunt). Gavin is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics and is Co-Editor of the Corpus and Discourse book series, published by Bloomsbury.

Tony McEnery is a Distinguished Professor at Lancaster University, Fellow of British Academy of Social Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce, and Chair Professor of Xi’an Jiaotong University. As a world leading scholar in Corpus Linguistics, he has published a lot of highly cited books, book chapters, and journal papers, and he also led to produce datasets like LCMC, EMILLE, CALLHOME, BNC Spoken 2014, etc. He is the general editor of Corpora, and editor of International Journal of Corpus Linguistics.

讲座内容:This talk explores the field of health communication, and considers how methods within corpus linguistics can enrich the analysis of language about health and illness, as well as language broadly taking place within illness and health(care) contexts. As a way of demonstrating these benefits, I report on a corpus analysis of the metaphors that newspapers use to represent a global health concern – dementia. Following the analysis, I reflect on the power of metaphorical language use to both create and challenge stigma around ageing and dementia. I also consider, in a broader sense, the opportunities and challenges for those seeking to use corpus linguistic methods in research within, and on, healthcare contexts.
