The traditional method of validation in language assessment and interpretation has primarily relied on psychometric analysis of test data and expert evaluations of test content. However, there has been a growing trend towards the use of biometric evidence to inform the development and validation of assessment tools in these fields. In this presentation, the application of three biometric technologies, including eye-tracking, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and galvanic skin response (GSR), will be discussed. The capabilities of each technology will be examined, along with previous research in language assessment and related fields, and the ways in which these methods can provide evidence for the validity of language assessment will be explored. The limitations of these technologies will also be addressed, as well as suggestions for future research. Additionally, the potential for data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to be utilized in the analysis of biometric data and the creation of predictive models will be briefly mentioned.
