报告题目: Introduction to symmetry and invariants, with applications to reassembling broken objects and puzzles

摘要: Basic problems in image processing include recognizing when two objects are the same and classifying their symmetries.  The underlying mathematical apparatus is group theory, and the solution relies on the associated invariants.  In Euclidean geometry, familiar examples include inter-point distances and areas, along with curvature and torsion of curves and surfaces.  The talk will introduce the basics of groups, symmetries, and invariants, illustrated by simple examples and pictures.  This will be followed by recent applications to automated assembly of broken objects, such as jigsaw puzzles, egg shells and bones.
