The narrative describes the overwhelming perplexities and traumas the author suffered growing up being the eldest daughter of a Chinese American immigrant couple, and how she was inspired by Chinese legendary heroine Mulan and other heroic Chinese figures so that she ended up growing out of racial and gender prejudices, thereby becoming a female warrior. In 1998, the release of Walt Disney Pictures’ animated feature film Mulan made Mulan more famous in the United States. This lecture focuses on how the image of Mulan changes in Kingston’s masterpiece The Woman Warrior as well as in the Disney film Mulan and what causes these remarkable transformations.
