Nevertheless, conventional metal foams/meshes feature bulky structural features and smooth ligaments, possessing very low specific surface area. To address this difficulty, current strategies focus on depositing foreign nanostructures of larger surface area onto the foams/meshes, which suffers from easy detachment with limited applications. There is a pressing need for a convenient and universal method to effectively increase the surface area of metal foams/meshes. Here we present a facile and economical electrochemical method to bestow metal foams/meshes with a nanostructured surface of large area. Different from those previous efforts of coating metal foams with foreign species, we utilize a new approach by directly roughening the framework ligaments in a one-pot one-step manner through repetitive electrodeposition and dealloy treatments. The treated high surface-area metals enable greatly improved performance for different applications, e.g., as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. The method reported here represents a universal solution for effectively roughening metal foams and thus open a new route to high-performance metallic materials in wide-ranging applications.
