In particular, quantum dot nanocrystals have demonstrated their great potential to be applied in a wide variety of applications as a unique emissive material. In my talk, I will first describe our experimental effort for the synthesis and characterization of a variety of quantum dot nanocrystals from homogenous materials to heterogeneous structures. These dots combine, in one material, all the best performance metrics desired in quantum emissive nanomaterials. In the second part of my talk, I will show how we can use colloidal nanocrystals as building blocks to generate higher-order architectures in assemblies. Several examples will be discussed from simple isotropic systems to complex anisotropic multifunctional materials. Their potential applications for biological and energy applications will be discussed as well.
