My research group has been focusing on the chemistry and processing of conjugated ladder polymers, in which all the polymer backbone units are fused and π-conjugated. This type of structure mimics the constitution of graphene nanoribbons, endowing synthetic polymers with promising electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. These unique rigid structure features, however, also lead to difficulties in defect-free synthesis, solubility, and mechanical adaptability. Therefore, these materials are not yet widely applicable despite the theoretical promises. To resolve this dilemma, we aimed to integrate the seemingly incompatible features of rigid ladder polymers with the advantages of conventional non-ladder type soft polymers. In one example, we utilized non-covalent bond to actively manipulate the coplanar conformation of ladder type macromolecules, and meanwhile to achieve solution processability. In another example, we developed an efficient method to construct covalent ladder polymer that is free of defect, using thermodynamically controlled ring-closing olefin metathesis. This new methodology enabled the synthesis of a wide variety of novel fused-ring compounds that are not accessible before. Moreover, we synthesized a highly robust ladder-type poly(indenoquinacridone) polymer equipped with numerous intermolecular hydrogen bonds through a scalable kinetic annulation strategy. The processability challenge of this highly insoluble material was addressed by using cleavable protecting side-chains, allowing for its application as solution-processed yet solvent-resistant films and composites. Overall, these advancements directly addressed the critical issues associated with the practical applications of ladder polymers.


方磊,1983年生于江西鄱阳。2003年本科毕业于武汉大学化学基地班,2006年获武汉大学硕士学位,导师何永炳教授。2010年获美国西北大学化学博士学位,师从2016年诺贝尔奖得主Fraser Stoddart教授。20112013年在斯坦福大学化工系鲍哲南教授课题组从事博士后研究工作。20138月加盟得克萨斯A&M大学(TAMU)化学系,现为终身制助理教授。方磊的独立课题组5年内吸引并直接支配了200余万美元的科研经费。先后获得西北大学Ryan 研究生奖学金,中国国家优秀自费留学生奖学金,IUPAC青年化学家提名奖,ACS 石油研究基金新锐学者,钟渊化工(Kaneka)青年教授奖,ACS PMSE青年学者荣誉, 2017年美国国家自然科学基金杰出青年基金(NSF CAREER Award)Montague-CTE优秀教学奖,Polymers青年学者奖,皇家化学会Emerging Investigator。发表论文50多篇,被引用超过3500次。为多个国际顶尖杂志审稿人,包括Nature Chemistry, Chem, JACS, Angew Chem, Nature Communication, Advanced Materials, Chemical Science等等。担任美国化学会国家奖项评审委员,美国国防部研究生奖学金评委,NSF基金评委,以及Lawrence Berkeley国家实验室用户评审委员。执教基础有机化学,高分子化学,及物理有机化学课程。
